After an Exciting Victory Over Italy, the U20 U.S. Team Fell to Morocco, Ending Its World Cup Run
The United States reached a fifth consecutive quarterfinal of the FIFA men's Under-20 World Cup after defeating Italy 3-0 in Rancagua, Chile, last Thursday. Captain Benjamin Cremaschi scored twice, either side of Niko Tsakiris' curling free kick, as the U.S. ran out comfortable winners, demonstrating their dominance throughout the tournament's group stage. Marko Mitrović's young side had entered the round of 16 in excellent form, topping their group and breaking team records with 13 goals scored during the group stage, including an impressive 9-1 victory over New Caledonia and a 3-0 win over France.
However, the Americans' promising run came to an abrupt end on Sunday when they faced Morocco in the quarterfinals. Despite controlling the match with 73 percent possession, the U.S. suffered a devastating 3-1 defeat. The team created numerous opportunities throughout the match but struggled to convert their dominance into meaningful chances, managing only three shots on target.
Morocco capitalized on U.S. defensive lapses to build a commanding position. After falling behind early, Cole Campbell equalized from the penalty spot to level the match at halftime. But defensive miscommunication and poor execution in the second half proved costly. Morocco's second goal came from a mistake in the box following a long throw-in, while their third came when confusion between a substitute Taha Habroune and goalkeeper Adam Beaudry gifted them a simple finish.
The tournament showcased both the potential and limitations of the American squad. Their impressive victories over France and Italy had raised hopes of reaching the semifinals for just the second time since 1989. Yet Morocco's clinical finishing and defensive organization proved too much to overcome. While the U.S. team departed the tournament with significant accomplishments, including a record 17 goals from 10 different players across their five matches, they ultimately fell short of their championship aspirations.
