Midfielder Excelled in First Start Since Injury Return
Aidan Morris returned to Michael Carrick's starting lineup on Tuesday, playing a full 90 minutes in Middlesbrough's 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion after being sidelined since November with a knee injury.
The 23-year-old immediately impacted, recording two interceptions and nine recoveries. His return significantly boosts Middlesbrough, who sit fifth in the EFL Championship with 18 matches remaining.
Carrick praised Morris's performance, stating, "We weren't sure how long he was going to last, but he got through the game, which was good. Always when you've been out that long, the first 90 minutes is a big positive step for different reasons: for fitness and mentally to know you can get through it."
Midfield partner Hayden Hackney welcomed Morris's return, noting, "We just have that connection... I would say it allows me more freedom. You could see tonight how he likes to drop in between the two center-backs to build up play... That gives me that little bit more freedom to get higher up the pitch."
Morris's deeper-lying playing style complements Hackney's more forward-thinking approach. Since joining from Columbus Crew last summer, Morris has made 19 appearances for the club and is crucial to Middlesbrough's midfield strategy. The midfielder's return comes at a critical time, with Middlesbrough preparing to face Preston North End and rivals Sunderland in upcoming fixtures.
